If an adoption from an independent rescuer occurs, the new pet parent is asked to make a contribution toward a vet bill the rescuer has paid on behalf of the dog.

So often at HEART we agonize over the plight of needy animals we see on the streets, in shelters and in the hands of irresponsible people. It's quite a "high" when we are able to make a difference in the life of a deserving canine. These are just a few of the dogs HEART has helped.

"LILLIE"
Lillie was a stray in Buffalo and was caught in a humane trap by HEART volunteers. She was a sad, painfully thin, scared little Pit Bull puppy, tiny enough to fit in the palm of your hand. She's grown up to be healthy, happy and sweet. According to her Mom, also a HEART volunteer, Lillie is a perfect example of what a Pit Bull is when given the same love and respect that other breeds enjoy. There are thousands of Pit Bulls that are cherished family pets, who are gentle with children and excel in obedience. They deserve to be rescued just as much as any other breed. Can you open your heart and home to another one? Check our website and www.postapoochplus.com for new listings. |

"TOBY" A Heart the Size of Mt. Rushmore!!
Toby is a big lovable lug of a dog - mostly Black Lab. He is a sweet, totally lovable, gentle, obedient, very playful, healthy, young adult dog. He spent three long cold days and nights in a ditch with a shattered leg and a raging infection. He was so hurt and frightened!! HEART volunteers rushed Toby to the emergency room. Unfortunately, the injured hind leg had to be amputated. Toby is a wonderful dog and is not at all slowed down by the fact that he has only three legs. If he had gone to a traditional shelter, it might have been "curtains". But HEART believes that all animals deserve the right to live a good quality life, regardless of handicap or personality. HEART found Toby a wonderful new home with his new best friend Sonya Rae (below). |

"SONYA RAE"
Sonya is a small Terrier. She was left unclaimed at a local town shelter with a broken pelvis. Sonya's mandated stray time was up and her situation was urgent. The shelter turned Sonya over to HEART and she was placed in a HEART foster home. She received expert veterinary care and LOTS of love in her foster home. Sonya recovered and was adopted into a loving, forever home where she is a cherished member of the family. |

"BRADY"
Brady, a Cocker Spaniel, was a sweet, little lost dog with severe cherry eye in both eyes. Cherry eye is a condition in which a gland located below the inner corner of the eye protrudes or "prolapses," flipping up and coming out of the eye. He was sad, uncomfortable, and frightened. HEART arranged for Brady's eye surgery and he is now a happy guy with canine friends and lots of love. We finally did find Brady's owner who decided not to re-claim him. But Brady has a happy ending!! He has been adopted through HEART and loves his new life with people who care. |

"EMMA"
“EYES FOR EMMA” was a HEART Inc. special project to benefit Emma, a sweet, loving, 5-year old Newfoundland who had been blind since puppyhood. Emma was ignored and penned outdoors in a stone enclosure for five long years before being rescued by HEART volunteers. She would crawl from place to place on her belly since she lacked the confidence to stand and walk. She was in desperate need of grooming and needed four baths the day she came to HEART because of the filth she had been living in and sleeping in. She also had a raging ear infection. Emma was a very sad and extremely neglected dog. After taking Emma to an animal eye care specialist, we discovered that she could gain her eye sight with expensive eye surgery. HEART is used to taking in special needs animals and as you can imagine, we fundraise constantly to make ends meet. But we knew the surgery would be well worth the cost considering the difference it would make in Emma's life. With the help of many caring people who donated to help Emma, we were successful. Emma would like to thank all the wonderful people who made her eye surgery possible. Thanks to YOU, she is now a happy "6-year old puppy" enjoying things she never even knew existed! And, she has been adopted by a family that loves her very much. |

"LADY"
Lady, a collie mix, is one of our "Bud Project" success stories. She lived chained outdoors. HEART came to the rescue when a concerned animal lover called to tell us about her. We took her in immediately only to find that she was being eaten alive by over 100 maggots under her fur due to open wounds from severe matting. Her picture shows her shaved back due to maggots. Lady is now safe, loved and successfully recovering in HEART foster care. |

"MILLIE"
MILLIE was a tiny, gentle pup. She was found dehydrated and near death by the side of the road by a HEART volunteer. Millie was loaded with lice and she could barely lift her head. She was rushed to the veterinarian where she spent many days in intensive care. She had loving clinic caregivers and HEART volunteers as visitors who brought her stuffed toys to keep her company. Sadly, Millie didn’t make it. She passed on knowing that she had lots of new friends who loved her very much. Even if that’s all we could do, we still made a difference in the life of this precious little dog. |

"SKYE"
Skye (black dog) came to HEART at 16 weeks old. Her parents are purebred Great Danes that were intentionally bred to sell the puppies. But Skye was born with a severe problem – her back legs would not support her. Since Skye could not be sold she was given up for euthanasia. But HEART came to her rescue and immediately stepped in. We had her assessed by a veterinarian and after diagnosis began a course of physical therapy and special diet to promote muscle development. Skye was unable to stand or walk on her own at first. But with the help of her loving and dedicated foster parents, Skye is now running, playing and thoroughly enjoying puppyhood in her HEART rehab home. Bullitt, her canine foster sibling, helps by giving Skye lots of attention. Her unusual gait doesn't stop her from much and she is improving daily. She may never walk or run as a typical Dane, but we doubt if she cares!!! |
