EVERY YEAR THOUSANDS OF ADOPTABLE AND LOVING DOGS
ARE EUTHANIZED IN AREA SHELTERS
HEART IS COMMITTED TO HELPING THESE ANIMALS
Many animal shelters face the dilemma of overcrowded conditions, forcing them to take heartbreaking and drastic measures in dealing with the problem of too many animals and not enough homes. Shelters must resort to euthanasia because they simply have no other choice. They are forced to euthanize healthy adoptable dogs for lack of space, breed or size of dog.
The mission of HEART’s Dog Division is to rescue healthy, treatable and adoptable dogs before their “time is up” at area shelters and animal control. These dogs are often big, often older, and often stereotyped breeds. But, they are adoptable and their fate will be tragic without our help.
The rescue of healthy and adoptable shelter dogs is our main focus for the next several years. We are committed to rescuing these dogs from shelters. We place them into HEART foster homes and evaluate them for friendliness, energy level, aggression, and other traits. They are spayed or neutered and vaccinated. When they are ready we will place them up for adoption into a loving home.
The path to HEART may not have been an easy one for many of these dogs, but we will make sure that nothing bad will ever happen to them again. We will work extremely hard to find the most perfect, loving, new homes these dogs deserve.
CHOOSE THE ADOPTION OPTION
Each year thousands of loving and adoptable dogs are put to death in local shelters simply because there’s no room for them. Adopting a dog will save a life and brighten yours.
When you look at that dog who has become a member of your family, imagine what might have happened to your companion had you not adopted him. He might have ended up like thousands of dogs do every year - being euthanized to make room for more dogs.
HEART considers the adoption of any pet to be a life-long commitment of time, affection, money, and responsibility. Many things are taken into consideration when matching a dog with an owner so that we can make the right match for both you and the dog. The dogs you see on this page are some of the lucky ones – they have homes.
THE JOY OF FOSTERING
There is a way to enjoy doggie companionship and help a dog in need on a temporary basis; it’s called fostering. HEART relies on volunteer foster homes – one of our most critical needs. Foster parents prepare the animal for life in a "real" home by providing a warm, safe, healthy, loving environment for the foster animal.
Our rescued dogs need an emotionally supportive place to live until they are placed in their forever homes. Some may need a little extra compassion to help recover from their ordeal of anguish, abandonment and sometimes, injuries. That haven, where a lonely dog can heal his broken heart, could be your home.
You will know the joy of fostering when you watch a new owner shower your foster pet with kisses and love. Do you want lots of tail wags, wet nose kisses, dog hugs and the emotionally satisfying feeling of having saved a life? Are you willing to turn your home into a halfway house for a dog that really, really needs you? HEART needs people like you!
VOLUNTEER AND PUT YOUR LOVE OF DOGS INTO ACTION
HEART relies solely on the time, energy, and dedication of volunteers. Brought together by a love of animals, our volunteers save the lives of hundreds of animals each year. It's true that no one person can save them all…but if you can make a difference in the life of just one dog, your contribution is invaluable.
We are looking for dedicated volunteers with a shared vision to help HEART rescue and care for shelter dogs. In addition to foster homes, people with dog grooming, socialization or training experience are needed and are welcome to join our mission.
